Meet Mwila Sibanda

Mwila Sibanda

We would like to introduce Mwila to you, and for you to get to know the journey that led to her becoming part of the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme, a little bit more. Mwila joined the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme in 2023, as one of our beneficiary’s from the Chibombo district in Zambia. Her favourite subject at school is Mathematics, and her least favourite is Geography. Mwila’s hobbies include reading English novels. Before joining the S.H.E Programme, Mwila had numerous barriers that prevented her from going to school and attaining an education. When she was a child, Mwila’s father abandoned the family, leaving her mother to look after and provide for nine family members in total, including her 83 year old grandmother. This was devasting to the family. Mwila’s father was the breadwinner of the family, thus, it left her mother. unable to provide for, and meet her family’s basic needs.

Her mother and other family members decided to become involved in small-scale farming, in order to earn some money for the family to survive on. Despite the family being able to just make ends meet, there unfortunately is no allowance to meet Mwila’s basic needs, especially when it came to her education. Often when she was able to go to school, she did not have her basic school supplies such as stationery, textbooks or a school uniform, which made her feel insecure.

After meeting Mwila’s teachers at her school, we found out that her academic ability was exceptional, despite her missing numerous days of school at a time. She is a really hard worker, and has a strong passion to be educated. Her teachers believe that with Catalyst Foundation’s support, she has the potential to accomplish phenomenal results in her exams and achieve great things in her future.

Through our holistic support provided to Mwila, we were able to remove all of her barriers, allowing her to go to school and continue with her education. We provided her with new school uniforms, shoes, a school bag, stationery, textbooks, exercise books, sanitary wear and family food hampers. Our health check examinations carried out, identified that Mwila had an urinary Tract Infection (UTI). From this analysis, we were able to address her health issues, and she is now perfectly healthy.

Mwila’s mother expresses gratitude and commends Catalyst Foundation for promoting girl-child education, and empowering the girl child, particularly for sponsoring and supporting her daughter through education. now has peace of mind, knowing that all of her needs are taken care of, and she can now focus on supporting the rest of the family, as best as they possibly can.

Since joining the S.H.E Programme, Mwila has transformed into a confident individual, and is motivated to continue studying hard to complete her studies with flying colours. Once she finishes her secondary schooling, she has dreams of going to university to become a Doctor.

We asked Mwila to share with us in one sentence what the

Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme means to her:

“With the support that I receive from the Catalyst Foundation, my mother is now able to provide more for my family, because my needs are now taken care of.”
