Meet Miriro Mukavi

Miriro Mukavi

We would like to introduce Miriro to you, and for you to get to know the journey that led to her becoming part of the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme, a little bit more. Miriro joined the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme in 2022, as one of our beneficiary’s from the Beatrice district in Zimbabwe. She really loves the colour pink, eating rice, with any protein available, and her hobbies include reading novels and playing volleyball. Before joining the S.H.E Programme, Miriro had numerous barriers that prevented her from going to school and attaining an education. When Miriro was six years old, her father passed away, and her mother abandoned her for a better life. Luckily, her uncle and aunt adopted her and her three siblings, but they unable to fully support them with their basic needs, due to their unstable financial situation.

As a result of this, Miriro was unable to eat a balanced diet daily, due to a lack of adequate food being available, and was unable to consistently go to school, as her school and examination fees were often not paid. When she was able to go back to school, which wasn’t very often, she did not have any stationery supplies, textbooks, a school uniform and sanitary wear. Travelling to school daily was also a struggle for her, as she had to walk a very long distance to and from school every day, making her really tired and unable to fully focus on her studies.

After meeting Miriro’s teachers at her school, we found out that her grades were below average, as a result of missing so many days of school at a time. She is often slow at comprehending content in class, and her English proficiency is not too great. However, she does work really hard when she is at school, and her teachers believe that she has the potential to greatly improve her grades over time.

Through our holistic support provided to Miriro, we were able to remove all of her barriers, allowing her to go to school and continue with her education. Our health check examinations carried out, identified that she had multiple health issues, such as an Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and severe stomach pains. From this analysis, we were able to address these two health issues, and now she is perfectly healthy. After receiving her new bicycle, Miriro is now able to travel to school a lot easier and quicker, allowing her to have more energy to focus on her schoolwork. Her family now has peace of mind, knowing that they do not have to worry about Miriro’s basic needs which is a huge relief from them, and are now able to focus on raising enough funds, through various activities, to send Miriro’s siblings to school.

Miriro has now progressed to high school, and her academic results continue to improve. Once she finishes her secondary schooling, she has dreams of going to University to become a Meteorologist.

We asked Miriro to share with us in one sentence what the

Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme means to her:

“I greatly appreciate what the S.H.E Programme is doing for me, by giving me a chance to go to school, and finish my studies without worrying about where the money will come from.”
