Meet Mary Manyika

Mary Manyika

We would like to introduce Mary to you, and for you to get to know the journey that led to her becoming part of the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme, a little bit more. Mary joined the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme in 2023, as one of our beneficiary’s from the Chibombo district in Zambia. Her favourite subjects at school are Mathematics, and her least favourite is learning English language. Mary’s hobbies include reading novels. Before joining the S.H.E Programme, Jennifer had numerous barriers that prevented her from going to school and attaining an education. She currently lives with both her parents and six siblings. Despite her parents farming to earn an income, they were unable to fully meet Mary’s basic needs.

Times when the family’s farming projects were not going too well, Mary was unable to go to school. However, when she was able to return to school, she did not have access to stationery supplies, textbooks or a school uniform, making her feel insecure. After meeting Mary’s teachers at her school, we found out that her academic ability was exceptional, despite her missing numerous days of school at a time. She is a really hard worker, and has a strong passion to be educated. Her teachers believe that with Catalyst Foundation’s support, she has the potential to accomplish phenomenal results in her exams and achieve great things in her future.

Through our holistic support provided to Mary, we were able to remove all of her barriers, allowing her to go to school and continue with her education. We provided her with new school uniforms, shoes, a school bag, stationery, textbooks, exercise books, sanitary wear and family food hampers. Our health check examinations carried out, identified that Mary had a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). From this analysis, we were able to address this issue, and now she is perfectly healthy.  Mary’s parents now have peace of mind, knowing that all of her needs are taken care of by the Catalyst Foundation, allowing them to now be able to focus on supporting her siblings’ needs as best as they possibly can.

Since joining the S.H.E Programme, Mary has transformed into a confident individual, and is motivated to continue studying hard to complete her studies with flying colours. Once she finishes her secondary schooling, she has dreams of going to university to become a Teacher.

We asked Mary to share with us in one sentence what the

Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme means to her:

“By the Catalyst Foundation support me, it means that I do have hope and a future to look forward to.”
