Meet Jika Mwele

Jika Mwele

We would like to introduce Jika to you, and for you to get to know the journey that led to her becoming part of the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme, a little bit more. Jika joined the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme in 2023, as one of our beneficiary’s from the Chibombo district in Zambia. Her favourite subject at school is Mathematics, but she does find learning Chitonga (one of Zambia’s local languages) really difficult. She enjoys playing Netball at school. Before joining the S.H.E Programme, Jika had numerous barriers that prevented her from going to school and attaining an education. Jika lives with her mother and two siblings, as sadly, her father passed away when she was very young. Jika’s mother sometimes works in the nearby community members fields, but this is not consistent, as she has to also look after the family and running of the household. To assist her family’s financial situation and her schooling expenses, Jika would sometimes not go to school, to also find work, to earn some money.

Due to Jika’s family’s financial instability, she would sometimes go a few days without any food, and she was unable to consistently go to school, as often, she was either working multiple jobs to earn some money, or if she was unable to find any work, she would stay at home, as she was unable to pay for her school fees or other basic school supplies required.

After meeting Jika’s teachers at her school, we found out that she is intelligent, despite missing so many days of school at a time. She has a really sweet and kind character, with a strong passion to be educated. Her teachers believe that with Catalyst Foundation’s support, she is going to do really well in her schooling, and go on to achieve many great things in her future.

Through our holistic support provided to Jika, we were able to remove all of her barriers, allowing her to go to school and continue with her education. We provided her with new school uniforms, shoes, a school bag, stationery, textbooks, exercise books, sanitary wear and family food hampers. Our health check examinations carried out, identified that she had an Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). From this analysis, we were able to address this health issue, and now she is perfectly healthy. Jika’s mother now has peace of mind, knowing that her needs are taken care of by the Catalyst Foundation.

Since joining the S.H.E Programme, Jika is now motivated to continue studying hard to complete her studies with flying colours. Once she finishes her secondary schooling, she has dreams of going to university to become a Teacher.

We asked Jika to share with us what the

Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme means to her:

“My teachers at school inspire me every day to also become a teacher one day, which is very exciting. This inspiration was only made possible through the S.H.E Programme’s support, because without it, I wouldn’t have been able to go back to school and realise this.”
