Mental health is the foundation upon which every child builds their future. As we observe Children’s Mental Health Week 2026, we embrace the powerful theme: “This is My Place.” This theme reminds us that for a child to thrive, they must feel a sense of belonging, safety, and identity within their homes, schools, and communities.

The Challenges Our Children Face

In many of the communities we serve across Zimbabwe and Zambia, children face a unique set of stressors. From the pressures of extreme poverty and food insecurity to the trauma of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) or the loss of primary caregivers, the “place” a child occupies can often feel unstable.

When a child lacks a sense of belonging or feels unsafe, their mental health suffers. This often manifests as withdrawal, declining academic performance, or anxiety. Without a “safe place” to process these emotions, these challenges can become lifelong barriers to success.

How We Can Help: Creating “Safe Places”

Supporting a child’s mental health starts with listening. It requires us to move beyond simply providing school fees and textbooks; we must provide emotional scaffolding. We can help by:

  1. Validating their feelings: Letting children know their emotions are seen and heard.
  2. Providing stability: Creating environments where they feel they belong, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
  3. Professional intervention: Removing the stigma around seeking help for emotional distress.

The Catalyst Foundation Approach: Support Beyond the Classroom

At Catalyst Foundation, the “S” in our S.H.E. Programme stands for Secure. We believe a child cannot be secure if they are struggling internally. To address this, we have integrated comprehensive mental health support into our core operations:

  • Peer Support Groups: Our S.H.E. Clubs serve as the ultimate “safe place.” In these groups, girls share their lived experiences, realising they are not alone. This peer-to-peer connection builds resilience and fosters a deep sense of belonging.
  • Psychosocial Counselling: We provide professional psychosocial support for beneficiaries facing complex trauma. Our counsellors work on the ground to provide one-on-one sessions, helping children navigate grief, abuse, and the pressures of poverty.

Join Us in Making Space

Every child deserves to say, “This is My Place,” with confidence and peace of mind. Mental health is not a luxury; it is a right.

How You Can Help: You can support our mental health initiatives by sponsoring a S.H.E. Club or contributing to our counselling fund. Your support ensures that we can continue providing the professional care and safe environments our children need to heal and grow.
