Meet Salma Banda

Salma Banda

We would like to introduce Salma to you, and for you to get to know the journey that led to her becoming part of the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme, a little bit more. Salma joined the Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme in 2023, as one of our beneficiary’s from the Chibombo district in Zambia. Her favourite subject at school is Science, and her least favourite is English language. She enjoys playing girls Football, and her main hobby is listening to traditional Zambia music. Before joining the S.H.E Programme, Salma had numerous barriers that prevented her from going to school and attaining an education. She currently lives with both her parents and six siblings. Despite her parents farming to earn an income, they are unable to fully meet the family’s basic needs. Times when the family’s farming projects were not going too well, Salma was unable to go to school. Due to her determination to receive an education, she would sometimes offer to work in the fields of nearby community members, to try and earn some money to purchase her basic school supplies, as her parents were unable to.

After meeting Salma’s teachers at her school, we found out that her academic ability was exceptional, despite her missing numerous days of school at a time. She is a really hard worker, and has a strong passion to be educated. Her teachers believe that with Catalyst Foundation’s support, she has the potential to accomplish phenomenal results in her exams and achieve great things in her future.

Through our holistic support provided to Salma, we were able to remove all of her barriers, allowing her to go to school and continue with her education. We provided her with new school uniforms, shoes, a school bag, stationery, textbooks, exercise books, sanitary wear and family food hampers. Our health check examinations carried out, identified that Salma had a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). From this analysis, we were able to address this health issue, and now she is perfectly healthy, and pain free.  Salma’s parents now have peace of mind, knowing that all of her needs are taken care of by the Catalyst Foundation, allowing them to be able to focus on supporting her siblings and their needs.

Since joining the S.H.E Programme, Salma has transformed into a confident individual, and is motivated to continue studying hard to complete her studies with flying colours. Once she finishes her secondary schooling, she has dreams of going to university to become a Nurse.

We asked Salma to share with us in one sentence what the

Catalyst Foundation – S.H.E Programme means to her:

“Being able to go to school in a new uniform, with a new school bag and my own stationery feels amazing and I am motivated to make my SHE Family proud.”
