There was a time when Nenyasha Bwanali would have preferred to remain in the background.
Usually withdrawn and quiet, the Grade 7 learner from Beatrice District in Zimbabwe struggled not only to find her voice but also to find her footing in the classroom. Her academic performance was poor, and coming first in her class seemed far beyond reach.
Today, that picture has changed dramatically.
Nenyasha has transformed into a confident top-performing learner, showing how the right support and encouragement can empower a young girl to believe in herself and reach her potential.
For Nenyasha, the change did not happen overnight. It began with learning to see herself differently.
“The (S.H.E.) programme has helped me with grooming and building my confidence,” she said.
The girl who once struggled academically began to participate more, engage with her lessons and believe that she could do better. Her grades started to improve, eventually offsetting a remarkable academic turnaround.
From struggling at the bottom to standing at the top of her class, Nenyasha’s transformation has been as much about what she now believes she can achieve as it is about the marks on her report card.
Her newfound confidence was put to the test during the International Day of the African Child celebrations in Seke, where she performed a monologue speech before an audience consisting of government dignitaries and educators. For someone who had once been timid and reluctant to step forward, taking the stage was itself a defining moment.
Nenyasha’s performance received a standing ovation, turning what could have been an ordinary school activity into a powerful demonstration of how far she had come.
For Nenyasha, standing before an audience was no longer something to fear. It had become an opportunity to let her voice be heard.
“The SHE Programme has really improved my confidence. I am now able to stand in front of people and express myself without being afraid. I feel that this has made me a cut above other students because I am learning how to present myself, speak with confidence and believe in what I can do. It is shaping me as an individual because I am becoming more confident, disciplined and comfortable with who I am,” says Nenyasha.
Her story is therefore not simply one of improved grades. It is a story of personal transformation.
The once timid learner is becoming a force to reckon with, not because she is suddenly different from the girl she once was, but because she is discovering the potential that was always within her.
Today, Nenyasha carries herself differently. She speaks differently. She approaches her schoolwork differently. Most importantly, she sees herself differently.
And perhaps that is the most significant achievement of all.
“I never thought I could come first in my class or stand in front of people and speak with confidence. The SHE Programme helped me realise that I am capable of more than I thought. Now I believe in myself, and I am no longer afraid to show what I can do,” said Nenyasha
The girl who once struggled to find her place in the classroom is now first in her class. The girl who once shied away from the spotlight is now commanding an audience. And the girl who once may have doubted what she could achieve is learning to believe that her possibilities are much bigger than she imagined.
